KUALA LUMPUR: The recently revived Melaka-Dumai, Indonesia, bridge project, spanning 127.9 kilometers across the Straits of Melaka, is expected to benefit many public-listed construction companies given the sizable work packages, says Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB).

"In the future, companies with marine engineering and bridge-related construction track record are expected to be strong contenders for this project.

"While this piece of development will have a feel good factor among investors' sentiment, we are neutral given its business and economic feasibility and potential disruption on the busy shipping lane of Straits of Melaka," it said in a research note on 16 October.

The project, mooted in 1995 and estimated to cost between US$12.8 billion and US$15.1 billion, was expected to be completed in ten years but died down in 1997 due to the Asian financial crisis.
