GEORGE TOWN: An association of builders has urged the Federal Government to place essential building materials such as sand and granite under price control.
Penang Master Builders & Building Materials Dealers Association (PMBBMDA) president Datuk Lim Kai Seng said such a move would indirectly help to keep the selling price of property down.
“The Government should also not increase the Real Property Gains Tax substantially as the move could dampen the property market,” he said.
He also said the Government must set aside an allocation in Budget 2014 for the development of more affordable housing projects.
“PMBBMDA also wants the budget to pay attention to the implementation of more stimulus infrastructure projects in the country to drive the construction industry forward.
The Free Industrial Zone Penang Companies Association (Frepenca), which represents more than 60 factories in Bayan Lepas, wants the Government to provide matching grants in the Budget for local electronic companies that are automating and mechanising their production processes to reduce labour.
Frepenca chairman Heng Huck Lee said this would enable companies to cut labour expenditure.
“To ensure a maximum flow through to the local electronics sector, the matching grant should be confined to automation projects undertaken by Malaysian electronics companies.
“The grant should cover the upgrading or modifying of existing process equipment as well as implementation of new replacement of labour intensive processes,” Heng added.
